I hate disturbing the eerie silence in the forum, but I have some big news for all Blenderers out there - The newest build has a render baker with four options: 1) bake all material, light, and texture data, 2) bake ambient occlusion only, 3) bake normals (yaaaaay), and 4) bake texture. Now you can make real normal maps with Blender! Now you may all return to your prior vegetative states... ;D
